In March 2012, the Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta started a campaign for one of our brothers, Richard Bland III. As many of you may or may not know, Richard was born without fully working kidneys. Richard’s first donor, his mother, had given Richard one of her kidneys so that he may live a normal life free of dialysis. Since his first operation in May of 2006, his new kidney had performed up to expectations and given Richard the chance to continue life. In recent months, he had learned that his

donated kidney was failing. When Richard had come to the brotherhood for help, he was not yet approved by his insurance to get the donation. At the time, we had done everything we could with what little information we had. We had contacted The Buried Life through Twitter and we started our campaign.

Tweeting #SaveRichard was our first attempt at awareness, fundraising and a possible donor for Richard. The next day, Iota Theta hosted a rally on the campus green; members of The Buried Life flew into Kennesaw to help the cause accompanied by major news networks. Despite our fundraising, Richard had still not been approved for the transplant. In August, luck had struck. Richard had finally been approved by the Insurance Company to receive the transplant. With the funds raised, all Richard needs is a donor. Richard is currently on a four-year waiting list for a cadaver kidney. When we find someone with a kidney to match Richard’s blood and tissue type, we can cut that time to almost nothing. Without the kidney, Richard is subject to dialysis every night for eight hours. Because of his treatment, he feels tired and weak all the time, subject to nausea and he has to stay hooked up to a machine, almost disconnected from the world.

We are starting another campaign for Richard, and this time, we hope to turn #SaveRichard into #SavedRichard. If you are interested in donating to Richard, you can contact Emory University at 404-712-4857 any time before four o’clock. If you don’t match Richard’s blood or tissue type, there is the option of a swap donation, in which a donation would go to someone in need and in return, a kidney would be given to Richard.

In March, We were able to make #SaveRichard the #1 trending topic in Atlanta, #1 in The United States, and #3 in The World. Starting at 8:00pm ET Delta Tau Delta brothers will begin tweeting #SaveRichard. With your help we can become the #1 trending topic in the world and help save our brothers life! Invite everybody you know because we are going to need the help!
